United States Naval Observatory (USNO)

The United States Naval Observatory (USNO) provides a wide range of astronomical data and products, and serves as the official source of time for the U.S. Department of Defense and a standard of time for the entire United States. Public tours of the U.S. Naval Observatory in Washington, DC, are available on a limited basis. The James Melville Gilliss Library located on the grounds of the United States Naval Observatory is one of the preeminent scientific libraries in the United States. Tours focus on the history of the Naval Observatory, the USNO's timekeeping responsibilities, and more. Groups will also have a chance to view celestial objects through the 1895 vintage Alvan Clark refractor telescope.
