Historic Oakland Cemetery

Visit Historic Oakland Cemetery, a hidden treasure located less than a mile from the heart of downtown Atlanta. Historic Oakland Cemetery is Atlanta's most tangible link to the past and a unique setting for your students to experience history first-hand. As our knowledgeable tour guides lead you through this city park, they will teach your students about Atlanta history, the period gardens, Victorian art and architecture —everything that gives Oakland Cemetery its distinctive character. Important Atlanta milestones are represented at Oakland —from early builders to Civil War soldiers, leaders of industry, and Civil Rights pioneers. No matter where you turn, history surrounds you. In 1850, city fathers purchased six acres to serve as a public burial ground for a young but fast-growing town. Now at 48 acres, Oakland has become not only a sacred space for remembrance, but a resource to help your students forge connections between the past and the present.
