This spectacular seaside National Historic Landmark District features our flagship property, The House of the Seven Gables. Built in 1668, The Gables is the oldest wooden framed mansion in New England. Professional guides welcome student, scout, and homeschool groups throughout the year. Together they explore the architecture of the mansion, climb its famed hidden staircase, and learn about Salem’s maritime history as well as the legacy of Nathaniel Hawthorne, author of The House of the Seven Gables. Guests also enjoy touring Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Birthplace, strolling through magnificent three-season gardens, and visiting the unique museum store located in Retire-Becket House (c1655). Group rates available.
