Sandy Hook Lighthouse

The Sandy Hook Lighthouse has guided ships into New York Harbor since 1764. It is the oldest operating lighthouse in the country - it was even attacked during the Revolutionary War! Organized groups can learn about the Sandy Hook Lighthouse on a ranger-guided tour. Visitors learn about the importance of the lighthouse, and the technological advances made to its lighting systems, and lenses, during the 19th century. After climbing 95 steps, and a nine-rung ladder, groups can take in views of both New York Harbor and the surrounding grounds. Amazingly well-preserved, the unique octagonal tower houses a third-order Fresnel lens.
