New York City

Lower East Side Tenement Museum

Travel back to the early 1900s and experience the lives of immigrants along Orchard Street! A living history program lets your group meet costumed interpreters, and play the part of an immigrant themselves – or take on the role of a housing inspector, interview a tenant and a landlord, and investigate 97 Orchard Street to determine if the building is up to code. Hear stories of how immigrants stayed connected to their heritage, while also beginning their lives anew. On a neighborhood walking tour of the Lower East Side, discuss how public spaces, buildings, and culture shape a community’s identity.
