Thompson Island Outward Bound Education Center

Thompson Island Outward Bound Education Center’s Discovery programs use adventure and challenge in the natural world to help young people realize their potential as individuals, team members, and leaders. Created specifically for schools and community-based organizations, Discovery expeditions serve young people of all physical levels, backgrounds, and experiences from 5th grade through undergraduate college. Programs take place on the 204-acre Thompson Island, in the Boston Harbor Islands National Park, which features classrooms, labs, four challenge and climbing elements, a dining hall, and dorms for overnight stay. The island outdoor space includes meadows, forest, wetlands, and salt marshes, which serve as an ideal learning environment and promotes environmental stewardship.
Serving youth groups in metro-Boston and surrounding areas since 1988, Thompson Island Outward Bound Education Center is conveniently located 25 minutes away from Boston via ferry.

Through Thompson Island Outward Bound’s Educational Framework, Discovery programs use physical and mental challenge along with hands-on, socio-emotional and experiential learning to help participants realize their potential by working together, problem solving, and communicating effectively. Our main goal is to create transference from the challenges and experiences throughout a program. Discovery programs guide individuals and teams through an intentional sequence of collaborative and challenging activities while utilizing an extensive selection of low and high challenge course elements. Through reflection and group discussion, participants with be asked to think about how they can take the lessons they have learned about themselves and their peers back into their classrooms, homes, and communities. We create a program tailored specifically to the needs of each group of participants. Every program is designed to meet the desired outcomes and goals identified by you.
