Cooper Gristmill

Students, scouts, and campers who visit the Cooper Gristmill will witness the massive water wheel powering shafts, gears, and turning 2,000-pound mill stones as the master miller (in period dress) explains the history and workings of the mill. There are a variety of age-appropriate programs groups can take part in. Science, math, and history are combined in Simple Machines, where groups can learn how a simple pulley or lever made life significantly easier. During the Family Life in Milltown program, groups can take part in a variety of 19th century activities, such as carding fleece and wool, sewing on a treadle sewing machine, sawing wood, and washing clothes with a ringer.
