Fort C.F. Smith Park

Fort C.F. Smith was built by the Union army during the Civil War Era to protect the Aqueduct Bridge of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. The site features a 20th-century mansion called the Hendry House, Civil War earthwork ruins, trails, the Bird Creek, and an Ornamental Peace Garden. Groups will see the preserved ruins of 22 forts from the Civil War era, which include the bomb proof, 11 gun emplacements, the fort well, and more. On a walking tour of the park, groups may see resident and migrating birds, an assortment of plants and flowers, the farm shed, and more.
